The Blue Butterfly Bush ( Clerodendrum myricoides 'Ugandense') is a fast growing semi-tropical perennial with a loose, sprawling growth habit. It blooms in panicles of individual, uniquely shaped blue flowers that resemble butterflies, making it great choice foreasily bringing interesting and unusual elements to a tropical to sub-tropical garden.

Despite its unusual and exotic appearance, this plant is easy to grow and establishes quickly. Use it to create a large flowering hedge, as a background in mixed perennial beds, as a flowing free-form bush, or large outdoor garden potted plant. It takes a few seasons to mature and reach its full blooming potential, but is well worth the wait.

The best permanent growing location is one that receives the full spectrum of direct light for 6 to 8 hours daily, is convenient for regular watering to maintain consistent soil moisture. Plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media. Avoid dense clay and bog soils that drain poorly. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and control size. Feed a good quality slow release fertilizer annually in the Spring.

Blue Butterfly Bush is semi-tropical and recommended for USDA Zones 8B, 9, 10, 11. However, in Zone 8B it should be planted early in the season and protected from cold until very well established. We recommend protecting from frost and freezing in all Zones for the best overall appearance, longest life and earliest flowering.

Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
