Lespedeza thunbergii 'Little Volcano,' also known as Bush Clover, is a spectacular specimen with a unique growth habit. It matures at 6 to 8 feet tall with a spread that is often wider than its height. Its long, flexible, arching branches are tightly covered in soft, sage-green, trifoliate leaves. The plant produces cascades of long-lasting, small, pea-shaped, vibrant purple-pink blooms that literally cover the plant from mid-summer to late fall.

This plant is a sterile, non-invasive cultivar, making it a great choice for gardeners who want beautiful, late-season blooms without the worry of unintended spread. It is moderately drought-tolerant once well-established and can thrive in a wide range of well-draining soil types. It is also moderately cold-tolerant when winter dormant.

Care
When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in a location that receives full sun or very light afternoon-only shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture. Feed a good-quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer initially and annually in the early spring. Since the plant blooms on new wood, you can choose to either prune it after flowering to control its size and shape, or cut it back to the ground in late winter to encourage vigorous new growth each spring.

Indoor Growing : This plant is not well-suited for indoor growing. It grows large, requires 5 to 6 hours of full-spectrum light daily, and needs a period of chilling during dormancy to produce flowers.

Climate: This plant is recommended for temperate to subtropical climates in USDA Zones 6, 7, 8, and 9. In Zones 6, 7, and 8A, it's essential to mulch the roots heavily well ahead of the first frost to protect the plant during winter.

Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
