Tuscarora is one of the most popular and best loved of the Fauriei Hybrids introduced by the US National Arboretum. The research project begun at the facility in 1959 was a stellar success, producing a large number of improved hybrids that over came many of the problems the brilliant colored, but problem plagued Indica species. It originated in 1967 from the cross Lagerstroemia (L. indica × L. fauriei) 'Basham's Party Pink' × L. indica 'Cherokee'.

Tuscarora is typically grown as multi-stemmed busy tree, but can also be easily trained into a single truck standard tree form. About 15 to 20 feet is the average mature height. It begins blooming in mid to late summer and continues until the weather begin to cool and days grow shorter. The glossy green oval leaves are often are the first to show the subtle signs of changing seasons, changing from green to red to gold and orange before they are shed when the tree enters full winter dormancy.

Flowers are large panicles of crepe paper like flowers, typically appearing in a cone like shape at the terminal ends of branches.
