Pink Powder Puff Tree or Oriental Rose Cascade is a fast growing member of the large Mimosa Family.
Like most of this genus, the pinnate leaves close together like praying hands at night. The prolific pink to white puff ball flowers are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Peak boom is in the spring to mid fall. The buds resemble small berries.
The Oriental Rose Cascade is very similar to the Surinam Powder Puff (Calliandra surinaminsis) but grows somewhat smaller and has a distinctive horizontal growth habit. Both types are well suited for urban and small lot use, can be grown as single stalk tree or a large tree-like shrub. They can be mass planted, grown as a large boundary hedge, as a focal point or accent plant, or in large garden pots.
Calliandra schultzii is favored for bonsai culture, as the horizontal growth habit lends itself to the form; its trunk and limbs remain flexible for an extended time and it will grow and bloom indoors with the proper set up.
