Breynia distichia 'Nana', or Dwarf Snowbush, is a unique member of the Euphorbiaceae family that is native to the Pacific Coast, and gets its common name, Snowbush, from the splashes of white in the highly variegated green and white leaves. It is a tropical plant and will certainly not grow in snow; however, its unique coloring, combined with its light, fluffy growth habit, explains the common name. Snowbush is a distant relative of the poinsettia.
Unlike most plants that are cultivated primarily for beautiful flowers, the best feature of the Snowbush is the unique and unusual coloring of the foliage. It is a showy and versatile tropical plant that can make a lovely addition to the mixed perennial beds of a cottage-style garden or become an important part of more formal plantings. Snowbush is a great way to add visual interest and texture to any garden.
'Nana' or Dwarf Snowbush (also sometimes called 'Minima') is a selected cultivar of Breynia distichia that grows lower, slower, more rounded, and has smaller leaves with more sharply contrasted white and green variegation than the species. It will occasionally blush pink, but the predominant palette is lustrous, bright white, and light green. it an excellent choice for low borders, potted culture, fairy, and miniature gardens. It also adapts to indoor conditions much better than the larger growing, more pink type
Indoor Growing: Dwarf Snowbush can be grown indoors, but requires the full spectrum of indirect light for 4 to 6 hours daily to maintain the variegated color in the leaves. Supplemental measures to increase temperature in the growing area may be needed if growth stalls due to consistent coolness in the average indoor growing space. Take care not to overwater.
Climate: Dwarf Snowbush is a tropical plant and is recommended for growing in USDA Zones 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not consider factors such as humidity, rainfall, or day/night temperature variations.. Every growing environment has unique challenges.
.
Grower's Note: Dwarf Nana Snowbush is sometimes called 'Minima' and/or sold as Breynia nivosa, but appears to have been reclassified as a cultivar and not a species, as 'nivosa' is now referenced as a synonym for a different species of Breynia.
