Don Juan Live Climbing Rose Plant Perpetual Bloomer Fragrant Red Double Flowers Starter Size

While the Don Juan Climbing Rose (Rosa hybrida 'Don Juan') is technically considered to be a modern hybrid tea rose, it has been gracing garden trellises, walls, and fences for more than 60 years.  Undoubtedly, thousands of those plants began their lives from cuttings from a friend's or neighbor's yard in a jelly glass of water sitting on a sunny window sill., so it has more than earned an 'Heirloom' badge.

Although we couldn't find an official explanation as to why the Italian Rose Breeder, Michele Malandrone, may have chosen the name Don Juan when the plant was registered with the ARS in 1958, the reason for associating the large, densely doubled, highly fragrant, velvet-textured, black-toned, dark, blood-red flowers with the fictional romantic and seductive character,  Don Juan,  seem obvious.

The Don Juan Rose has many qualities in common with old antique roses, along with some of the best ones of modern hybrid:
The flowers are large, as much as 4 to 5 inches across, very showy, intensely colored,  and highly fragrant.   (Fragrant flowers are a somewhat unusual feature of modern climbing roses.)
It is a reliable, perpetual bloomer,  with a bounty of flowers occurring in cycles throughout the year.
Flowers are born at the terminal ends of long arching, moderately thorned canes, so well suited for cut flower arrangements.
Leaves grow dense and tight with short internodal spacing.  New leaves begin as a striking burgundy bronze color and mature into large,  glossy dark green and leathery textured pointed ovals with prominent veins.
Growth habit is fast and moderately aggressive.  It will mature at around 10 to 14 feet in just a few seasons within the recommended Zone Range of 5 to 9.
The Don Juan Rose is a sturdy, resilient plant that requires minimal maintenance aside from pruning and fertilizing.  It will generally self-cure season leaf spotting and needs no more than minimum to average monitoring for common garden pests.
It is a versatile, long-lived rose that can be used in many ways.   Don Juan can often be found in old landscapes growing as a  large, loose, sprawling free-form specimen,.  The more recent trends are planted along fences, walls,  trellises, arches, or arbors or trained into an espalier form.
The best location is outdoors in full sun.  The plant will tolerate light shade, but the bloom is reduced with decreasing light.  Roses are not generally considered suitable for growing indoors as houseplants.
