Acalypha pendula, or Dwarf Chenille Plant, is a small-scale version of the traditional Chenille Plant, known for its many interesting and versatile uses. It is also commonly called The Caterpillar Flower, Strawberry Firetails, Red Hot Cats, or Kitten's Tail.

It produces long-lasting, tufted, fuzzy, finger-sized, bright red flowers that resemble caterpillars. These striking and unusual blooms are present from mid-spring to late fall in tropical regions.

This plant's small stature, low-growing, draping habit, prolific and showy bloom make it a great choice for ground cover in non-traffic areas. Its spreading and cascading habit make it well suited for hanging baskets, urn-shaped garden pots, rock gardens, or raised beds or walls.

Care: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media. The best location is in full to partial afternoon shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture until well-established. Feed a good quality, slow-release, general-purpose fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Monitor for browning or spotting during wet, humid weather and treat as necessary.

Indoor Growing: While the plant can be grown indoors, foliage will generally grow larger and more lush in reduced light. Modifications to increase light and provide warm temperatures with a day/night differential to stimulate flowering are typically required to produce blooms indoors.

Climate: Dwarf Chenille is a tropical plant recommended for growing in Zones 9B, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all Zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not consider other variables.

Grower's Note:
It is easy to grow and establishes quickly, but it is not known to readily spread beyond the desired planting area.

Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
