Firecracker Fern (Russelia equistiformis) is a unique and interesting plant that is native to Mexico. It is not a true fern, despite the fern-like appearance of the lacy, delicate, elongated foliage that is actually a special type of leaf tissue known as a bract.
Firecracker Fern blooms throughout the warm season in fountain-like bursts of bright, scarlet red tubules that last for weeks and are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. It has many versatile uses in the sub-tropical and tropical landscape and works great for planters, baskets, and annual filler in colder regions.
Care: When mature, plant in fertile, coarse, well-draining soil or potting media in a full sun. Water sparingly to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants will become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Prune after flowering to control size, shape.
Indoor Growing: This plant can be grown indoors in conditions similar to those required for succulents. They require the full spectrum of light, warm temperatures, well-draining pots and coarse media. Modifications may be necessary to produce flowers indoors.
