Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, or Tropical Hibiscus, is a large species of flowering, tropical shrub native to Asia and the South Pacific. There are thousands of variations of flower forms and colors available today.
Plants are generally classed as 'Exotic Fancy Hibiscus' and 'Landscape Type'. The landscape types are tough, resilient, and suitable for growing in the ground in full sun within tropical to subtropical environments, and need only the minimum basic care to thrive and flower.
The Exotic or Fancy types of Tropical Hibiscus are hybrids and cultivars bred to produce larger flowers that are more complex in form and color than the Landscape Type. While the hybrid type plants tend to require some extra care and attention to thrive, the range varies from very delicate and temperamental plants that must be grafted to stronger root systems and closely monitored, to those that grow well on their own roots, are reasonably tough and resilient, and do not require excessive attention.
Evangeline is a Fancy Exotic hybrid of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis that produces large, 5 to 7 inches across, fancy, single flowers with ruffled petals in multiple, graduated tones of creamy white and yellow surrounding a soft strawberry to pastel pink throat, and is moderately easy to grow and maintain.
The plant matures into a sturdy, upright, well-branched bush about 3 feet in height with large, glossy, medium green foliage. It can be grown as an in-ground element in a tropical landscape in light shade with good care. However, it will require less attention, likely live longer, and produce larger, more colorful flowers when grown as a well-tended potted plant.
Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in light shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good-quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer initially and repeat annually in spring. Supplement with water-soluble plant food boosters as needed. Prune after flowering to control size and shape.
Indoor Growing: Exotic Tropical Hibiscus do not adapt easily to indoor growing environments due to their specific needs for light, humidity, and temperature fluctuations. Successful indoor cultivation will require significant modifications to an average growing space.
Climate: Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, a tropical plant recommended for outdoor growing within USDA Growing Zones 9, 10, 11. Cold protection is required in all Zones for optimum appearance, earliest flowering, and best overall plant health.
Condition: One (1) Well rooted, starter size plant w/ 4 inch diameter root zone. Plant will be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall and unlikely to have bloom or bud at the time of shipping. May be shipped bare, wrapped root ball w/o pot.
