Hula Girl is an Exotic Fancy type of Tropical Hibiscus. It is an old Heirloom Hybrid that remained popular more than 70 years. Originally hybridized by James Hendry and registered as James Hendry in the 1950s and also sold as 'James Hendry'. Its beautiful extra large, classic, hibiscus single flowers became an iconic symbol of tropical paradise in numerous billboards, travel brochures and advertisements promoting Florida tourism in the 1960s and 1970s.
The single flowers are large, consisting of five overlapping petals in sunny golden yellow body fading into a white rimmed strawberry red throat. Flowers open slowly and become almost fully recurved over 2 to 3 days.
The bush grows wide and upright and much more slowly than the average landscape types. Growth habit is dense and tight with large, serrated, glossy green leaves. It can be grown in the landscape with very good care, but requires protection from hot direct sun, staking to protect the root system, mulch to keep roots cool, and prompt treatment for any nutritional deficiencies or other health issues. It adapts to permanent potted culture easily, and will perform best and live longer as a well tended potted plant.
It is an old Heirloom Collector's Favorite, hybridized by James Hendry in Fort Myers, Florida in the 50's and registered as James Hendry, but was marketed as Hula Girl for many years.
