Kleim"s Hardy or Daisy Gardenia is a hybrid developed by Don Kleim at the Henderson Experiment Station in Clovis, California and endorsed and introduced more broadly by the JC Raulston Arboretum. The characteristics that sets Kleim's apart are the medium sized single, pinwheeled, daisy like flowers, its unique cold hardiness and heat tolerance, ability to adapt to grow in full sun, and retain the classic sweet, perfumed fragrance that is the hallmark of the Gardenia species.
It is quick to establish and requires minimal care to produce a bounty of luxurious large, wonderfully fragrant, pure white single flowers. The long bloom cycle begins in the late spring and lasts through mid summer.
Suitable for planting in the landscape or as potted plant. For the best results, plant well draining, slightly acidic soil. When growing in full sun, transition slowly and allow plants to fully mature before setting out.
Consensus on Recommended Zone Ranges has been reduced in recent years to 7-10, however, many report successful growing as far north as 5B and 6 with extra cold protection. Kleim's is generally considered to be hardy down to 0ºF when well mulched and acclimated.
