Clerondendrum smithianum is a fast-growing tropical Perennial with a loose, flowing growth habit. It is commonly called Light Bulbs or Chains of Glory.
It blooms in hanging red-stemmed cascading streamers of individual unique bulb-shaped buds with bronze burgundy sepals that open into white tubular-shaped single flowers with long stamens tipped with golden pollen. Although the buds open slowly over a few weeks, once fully open, the flowers are short-lived , lasting about 1 to 3 days at most.
It will mature at about 4 to 5 feet tall, and flowers in cycles from mid to late spring until late Fall. Plants enter a winter resting phase that is not full dormancy, but growth slows, and leaves will lose color. Typically, the resting phase is triggered when days get shorter and night temps drop below 60.
Care: Care: Easy to grow and quick to establish, this plant thrives in a permanent location with 4 to 6 hours of indirect light daily. Plant in fertile, well-draining soil and maintain consistent moisture. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and control size.
Indoor Growing: This plant has recently become a popular indoor growing project, largely due to online photos that show it flowering indoors. However, due to its mature size, light requirements, and need for modest chilling above freezing during winter dormancy, successful growing indoors is challenging. The more manageable strategy is to grow it as an outdoor potted plant and bring it inside when blooming, and then return it outdoors.
Climate: A semi-tropical perennial that is recommended for USDA Hardiness Zones 8B, 9, 10, and 11. In Zone 8B, it should be planted early in the season and protected from cold until very well established. We recommend protecting from frost and freezing in all zones for the best appearance and longevity. It goes through a winter dormant resting phase in all climates where plants shed some or most foliage and stop growing. This normal seasonal response is often mistaken for a disease or pest issue.
Condition: One (1) Well rooted, starter size plant with an approximate 4 inch diameter root zone. Plant will be a minimum of about 4 to 8 inches tall and unlikely to have bloom or bud at the time of shipping.
