Rangoon Creeper Chinese Honeysuckle Fragrant Single Flower Pink Red Tropical Live Vine Plant Starter Sz 4

Combretum indicum (syn: Quisqualis indica or grandiflora) or Rangoon Creepers are fast, large growing, woody, tropical, flowering shrubs with a sprawling vine-like habit that produce hanging masses of small, tubular, fragrant florets with five-petaled, pointed, swirled petals in multiple shades of white, pink, and maroon-red. It is also commonly known as Chinese Honeysuckle and Drunken Sailor Vine. Buds begin to appear in late spring to early summer, open as white, and gradually darken and change to pink and then maroon-red as the flower ages. The bloom cycle repeats throughout the warm season within the recommended Zone Ranges. It is a very showy and eye-catching specimen when in full bloom. The single-flowering type is the most common and widely cultivated. A mature, established plant is relatively easy to grow and requires little maintenance beyond pruning for shape, annual feeding, and adequate irrigation. However, it requires careful tending while becoming established, as it is not forgiving of errors in care. Oversights such as an overly saturated root zone, drying out, or exposure to temperature extremes are often fatal events that young plants cannot recover from. It should be started early in the season so plants can adapt and mature before nights get cooler and days get shorter. Rangoon Creeper enters a semi to fully dormant resting phase in winter in all climates. Note, however, that any rapid change in temperatures and/or light levels can trigger defoliation and a growth refresh and reset at any time of the year. Plants will frequently lose most of their leaves during transit. It is an inherent characteristic and expected behavior of the plant. The risk can be minimized by avoiding ordering in the late fall and early spring when temperatures vary the most. We take protective measures to mitigate shipping stress, but defoliation is the natural and normal way this plant responds to change. The best placement is full sun or light, partial afternoon shade, with a trellis or other support for the long arching limbs to showcase the flowers. However, it can also be grown as a sizeable free-form specimen. Rangoon Creepers grow large, with a mature bush averaging 6 to 8 feet with an equal spread, so allow adequate space when selecting a planting location. Mature plants need little care or maintenance beyond pruning in the early fall to shape them before they enter dormancy, annual feeding in the early spring, and protection from frost or freeze. While dormant plants can often survive brief exposure to mild cold in the low to mid-30s, planning for cold protection is recommended for the best appearance, earliest bloom, and longest life. Not recommended for growing indoors or for novice out-of-zone gardeners without prior overwintering experience.
