Terrrestrial or Ground Orchids are interesting, versatile, and easy-to-grow plants. Unlike their more delicate epiphyte orchid cousins, these types may be grown successfully planted in the ground.

Generally, the group has long, pleated, strapped lily-like leaves with a clumping growth habit. The flowers they produce are interesting, multi-hued mini orchids.

Spathoglottis x parsonsii is a natural hybrid first noticed in the Philippines for the blending of the flower characteristics of S. plicata and S. vanovergerghii, which are both common in that area. Since that time, cultivars have been selected in a variety of color combinations, including salmon, pink, deep purple, and yellow.

This one is a soft pastel yellow, barely blushed with lavender, with a pretty dark pink lip. It blooms periodically throughout the warm season, with peak periods in late spring to early summer and in early to mid-fall.

Care: The best location for this beautiful hybrid ground orchid is partial to lightly dappled all-day shade. Although the plants will grow in full sun, the foliage tends to spot and burn, and blooming is reduced. Water generously and feed with 1/2 strength water soluble bloom boosting fertilizer during the active growing season. Reduce watering in winter after flowering, stop feeding to allow plants to rest through their semi-dormant winter phase, and store energy for the next season.

Indoor Growing: Ground Orchids can be grown indoors, but may require modifications to increase light, humidity, temperature, and create a temperature differential to provide modest chilling during the winter resting phase, which is essential for creating flowers in the spring.

Climate: Spathoglottis x parsonsii is suited for growing outdoors in semi-tropical to tropical climates. The recommended Zone Range is 8B, 9, 10, 11, 12. Protection from frost and freezing is required in all zones for the optimum appearance, earliest flowering, and best overall plant health.

Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
