The Nun Orchid, so commonly named for its' hooded, collared flowers, is a large growing species of terrestrial orchid introduced into the United States from China in the 18th Century. It grows large, maturing at 2 to 3 feet tall, with large, wide, thinly pleated strap leaves. Other common names are Nuns Cap, Greater Swamp-orchid, Swamp Lily, Swamp Orchid, Nun's orchid and Veiled Orchid.

The showy, lightly fragrant, large multi shaded deep purple to white flowers, are surrounded by a brown toned mauve collar of elongated petals and rise from the pseudobulb main body of the plant in the late winter to early spring, in response to the shorter daylight hours. The flowers form and open slowly over several weeks and last for about for several weeks.

This orchid is definitely tropical and must be protected from chilling. Exposure to low temperatures in the mid 30'sºF can cause significant damage. Even brief exposure to freezing temperatures can be fatal.
