Bauhinia blakeana is the true Hong Kong Orchid originally found growing Pok Fu Lam on the western shore of Hong Kong Island, and among the most beautiful flowering trees that we offer.

It is believed to be a naturally occurring hybrid seedling cross between bauhinia purpurea and bauhina variagata. It is very popular, but often difficult to find, as it does not produce seed and in not easily propagated.

Small stature of 10 to 12 feet makes it well suited for urban and small lot applications. It is a favorite with bonsai enthusiasts for both miniaturization and large garden pots. The showy purple flowers are big (averaging up to 8 inches across) and begin to appear mid winter and last through early spring (in tropical climates), and resemble orchids.

Leaves have an unusual rounded oval shape and appear in pairs, resembling butterfly wings along gray mottled woody stems, lending year round texture and interest. The leaves fold together at dusk and during stormy or very cool weather.

This is a semi deciduous tree (meaning it sheds some leaves, but not all and enters semi dormancy in the winter months). When leaves begin to turn yellow and drop in the Fall, it the normal pattern and not a symptom of any disease or insect problem.

Hong Kong Orchids are very easy to grow and maintain once they are well established, but getting them to the 'well established' state can be a challenge. When young they are easily damaged by exposure to temps outside of their comfort range. (60*F to 90*F). The best location for young trees is in cool morning light with dappled shade in the afternoon. Lapses in watering are not easily forgiven. And typically the first incident where the root system dries out is the last one.
