This Tall Red Heirloom Penta or Egyptian Star Flower is one of this fast-growing perennial's oldest and best-loved versions. Although every season sees new introductions that grow smaller and more compact, they can't top this one for ease of growth and attractiveness to butterflies and hummingbirds of this tried and true old heirloom variety. Clusters of cheerful, nectar-rich, star-shaped, deep, true red flowers are present almost daily throughout the warm season and provide an excellent food source for a wide range of pollinators and hummingbirds.

So far as we know, it is the tallest grower of the species, reaching a height of about 3 -3 1/2 feet if left to grow unpruned. The name it was originally marketed under many decades ago seems lost. Today it is most often described just as Tall Red or Heirloom Red. There is debate about whether it is the same plant as 'Ruby'. We don't think so; based on best personal recollection, We believe Ruby was part of a series introduced in 70s/80s that included Orchid Illusion, a pink and a white that mature at about 2 to 2 1/2 feet

The Tall Red Penta is a prized, low-maintenance, easy-care heirloom favorite and a must-have for Butterfly or Hummingbird Gardens. They make an excellent background plant in mixed perennial beds. They also can be grown as potted plants indefinitely.

Condition: One (1) Well rooted, starter size plant w/ 4 inch diameter root zone. Plant will be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall and unlikely to have bloom or bud at the time of shipping. May be shipped bare, wrapped root ball w/o pot.
