Daturas are species of about a dozen herbaceous short lived perennial tropical flowering shrubs. They are often confused with Brugmansias, and while they do have some characteristics in common, they are not the same. Like the Brugmansias, the Daturas have large, trumpet shaped flowers that are highly fragrant at night.
Plants generally grow smaller and more shrub like. The flowers generally point outwards rather than hanging upside down. The flowers of Datura metel are large doubled, outward pointing trumpets in soft pastel yellow, with a slight green edge in the bud stage, and fading to cream as they age.
It grows large very quickly, easily becoming 5 to 6 feet tall with an equal spread in a single season, but remains full and bushy. It has a superior self branching somewhat horizontal growth habit that requires very little pruning or maintenance to achieve and maintain.
In the tropics it begins blooming early in the late spring and continues into the Fall until the nights cool and the days get short. Flowers last for 2-3 days. Bloom can be maximized and extended by removing seed pods before the ripen, as it is the general habit of the species, to grow vigorously during the warm season, produce seed, and enter dormancy from which it does not always emerge.
Seed pods are about the size of a golf ball, which is somewhat larger than the average for other Datura metels and are a bit oddly shaped with slightly blunted protrusions vs sharply defined thorn-like spines.
This plant is intended for use as an ornamental, decorative item only.
