Allamanda blanchetii a/k/a Allamanda violacea Cherry or Cherries Jubilee is a fast growing, semi-tropical plant with a sprawling vine-like growth habit. Although it does not put out tendrils to climb, the long, arching flexible limbs can be affixed to a support so that it may be grown grown much the same as any other vine.
It produces a bounty of large bell shaped flowers in dusty muted hues of burgundy, cherry red, pink and mauve begining in mid-Spring and lasting until mid Fall.
Plant early in the season, as soon as the danger of frost and freezing has passed when possible. The permanent planting area should be one that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of bright, direct full spectrum light. Allamandas can thrive across a wide range of well-draining soil types. Avoid planting dense poory drained areas. Feed a good quality slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and yearly thereafter in the Spring. Prune in early Fall after flowering. Avoid pruning during dormancy.
Allamandas go semi-dormant in the winter months and enter a resting phase. They shed most of their leaves and do not grow significantly thru the winter, This is a normal characteristic of the species.
