The botanical name sanguinea is from the Latin word for 'blood', and aptly describes the flower color.
Flowers with a single round outer petal and upright red stamens are tightly clustered along the branch and resemble upside-down Chinese hats or Cups in Saucers. It blooms several times yearly, with peak periods in spring and fall. There are cultivars in other colors, including an orange and yellow. The blood red cultivar is the most highly prized.
It is not a true vine, as it does not put out tendrils that will wrap and climb a support. Instead, it has long, flexible, arching branches that can be tied and trained to trellises or other supports.
