Spathodea campanulata, or African Tulip, is native to Africa, where it reaches heights up to 60 feet tall. Outside of the native habitat, heights of around 25 ft are average.
In the winter, the tree is covered with nectar rich, vibrant orange, cup shaped flowers which attract hummingbirds and other wildlife. Water, nectar, and insects will collect inside upturned blooms, making the tree a favored bird hangout.
This beautiful tree has recently been rediscovered by Southern Xeriscapers (i.e., landscapes with low water demands), as it is quite drought-tolerant once established.
It also does not burn easily, so it can be used in suburban landscapes as a natural firebreak in some wildfire-prone areas.
Plant in a large, open space away from buildings, as the wood is soft, and the limbs can break in high winds. It is somewhat salt-tolerant but will not withstand direct salt spray. The African Tulip is a fast-growing, quick-to-establish tree that can be expected to gain several feet each year.
This plant cannot be shipped to Hawaii.
