Bolivian Sunset (Seemannia sylvatica syn Gloxinia sylvatica) is a low-growing, flowering tropical plant that puts on a non-stop warm-weather show of intense, bright tropical color. It produces small, tubular, crimson-red flowers with yellow throats in cycles from late spring to early winter in tropical climates. The flowers are attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators.

It is an easy-care plant that makes a splendid, colorful shade garden ground cover, accent or potted plant for the patio, porch, or indoors. It reproduces from the rhizomes, making it very easy to establish a thick bed of rich color in light to moderate shade.

Care: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in light partial to moderate shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants will become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Prune lightly, as needed to refresh growth and prevent legginess.

Indoor Growing: Yes, but modifications such as higher temperatures and/or supplemental lighting may be necessary to produce flowers indoors. Performs well as an outdoor porch or patio plant.

Climate: Bolivian Sunset is a semi-tropical plant recommended for growing outdoors in Zones 8B, 9, 10, 11. It can survive brief drops below 32°F and light frost, but dies back to the ground and resprouts in the spring. Cold protection is recommended for the best year-round appearance, earliest flowering, and optimum overall plant health.

Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
