Megaskepasma erythroclamys, commonly called Brazilian Cloak, is a tropical shrub native to the rainforests of South America. It matures as a large-growing upright bush, and is a showy bloomer producing nearly foot-long stalks of flower spikes laden with bright magenta red bracts that are attractive to butterflies and many other pollinators.
Brazilian Clock is a versatile, easy-to-grow, low-maintenance plant that can be used in many interesting ways in tropical landscapes. It is a late-season bloomer that is an excellent choice to brighten up tropical landscapes in the fall and winter, when few other tropical plants are flowering. It will tolerate high heat and full sun, but performs best in partial afternoon shade, where blooms will remain brighter colored for longer. The broad, light green leaves and tall, quick growth habit result in a stunning informal tropical hedge, background, and transitional anchors in mixed perennial beds. It can also be grown as a large porch or patio plant and can be grown indoors with supplemental lighting and temperature modifications.
Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in full sun to light shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Prune after flowering to control size and shape.
Indoor Growing: Yes, but planning for mature size and modifications such as higher temperatures and/or supplemental lighting may be necessary to produce flowers indoors. Performs well as a large outdoor garden pot, porch, or patio plant.
Climate: It is a tropical plant and is recommended for growing in USDA Zones 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not take factors such as humidity, rainfall, or day/night temperature variations into consideration. Every growing environment has unique challenges
