Aristolocia gigantea, also known as Giant Dutchman's Pipevine, Pipe Vine, or Pelican Flower, is a unique, fast-growing, semitropical vine with large, oddly shaped, purple and cream-mottled flowers with a bright yellow vortex. It is a fast-growing, twining climber and is one of the most popular of the more than 500 species of this strange genus. When the odd buds have fully opened, the yellow mouth of the flower expands into a deep, narrowing, tubular channel and then emits a sweet, lemony scent that is irresistible to insects. Although these characteristics and the fleshy skin-like appearance of the large outer petal suggest this vine is a carnivorous plant, that is not the case, as the insects are not utilized for food.

For the Pipevine, this seductive trick lures insects into doing the critical pollination work necessary for reproduction. The next day, the flower stops producing the attractive scent, releases pollen on its captive, and the hairs relax to allow the insect to escape unharmed.

Pipevines attract a wide variety of Butterflies and other pollinators. Most Pipevine species are host plants for Swallowtail Butterflies, but not all species of Pipevines are suitable hosts for all species of Swallowtail Butterflies. Serious butterfly hobbyists and conservationists interested in creating habitats for blue-winged swallowtails (Battus philenor) should contact qualified experts for guidance on species selection.
