Hawaiian Bell, Sunset, or Braveheart Vine is a vigorous tropical vine that can easily cover a fence or trellis in a matter of weeks. It blooms in Fall and often again in the Spring with clusters of large, 2- to 3-inch, bell-shaped, nectar-rich flowers. The flowers come in rich, vibrant tones of coral, pink, mauve, and yellow, resembling a tropical sunset. They appear on a lush vine with immense, heart-shaped, hand-sized medium green leaves that become as large as a foot across if shaded from direct sun. There are few faster ways to bring a luxurious, exotic feel to a tropical garden than with Hawaiian Sunset Vine. And... the butterflies and hummingbirds absolutely love it.
A few things to know about it are that it grows quickly and gets big, so it definitely needs space. It will grow in full sun or full shade, but the best location is in lightly dappled shade or a spot with cool morning sun. Leaves tend to burn in mid-summer in full sun, and bloom is reduced in deep shade, so finding that happy mid-point is crucial. This plant has high water needs in hot, dry weather and needs high ambient humidity in the 60% to 80% range.
Although it is tropical and can be badly damaged by frost and freezing temperatures, it enters a dormant, resting phase in the winter that is usually associated with cold-hardy plants. After the glorious flush of flowers in the Fall, the leaves lose color and drop, leaving first-time growers wondering if the plant is sick or dying. It will rest through the winter and resume growing in the late Spring.
It's a remarkably fast-growing, carefree plant, but is prone to some common problems, especially when it begins breaking dormancy in the Spring. Watch for those and treat as needed. However, be careful not to misidentify the way it reacts to rapid changes in humidity and soil moisture. It develops bumps on the undersides of the leaves that can be easily mistaken for a pest problem, but these are just the way it naturally deals with excess water.
Grower's Note: Shipping in the late Fall and Winter will typically trigger dormancy, which should not be mistaken for transit damage.
