If you want your garden to be a favorite stopping off place for butterflies and hummingbirds, the Buddleias are a must-have. This is an easy-to-grow shrub that establishes quickly and can reach heights above 6 feet tall in a single season.
Buddleia x weyeriana "Honeycomb' has an interesting botanical pedigree. It is often presented as a cultivar of a unique Buddleia species; however, it is actually a cultivar of a hybrid of a hybrid. In other words, a plant several generations removed from the original early B. davidii x B. globulosa cross developed by Major William van de Weyer in the 1920s. The award-winning result is a tall-growing, sprawling, cold-tolerant, non-invasive shrub that produces an amazing display of large, cream, honey, and gold, nectar-rich blooms that can be used across a wide range of climate and soil types in many interesting ways.
Honeycomb can be distinguished from other Buddleias by its distinctive, larger, softer leaves, its tall, flexible, weeping limbs, and large terminal panicles. It can be used as a large, flowering boundary or privacy hedge, a background in layered and mixed perennial beds, grown as a single trunk patio standard tree, or as a large outdoor garden pot.
Honeycomb and other descendants of the Buddleia x weyeriana hybrids are not invasive and are suitable choices for Butterfly Gardens and other wildlife habitats. The nectar-filled flowers are an excellent food source, but the plant is not a preferred host.
Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in a full sun to lightly shaded area. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants will become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Prune after flowering to control size, shape, and remove seed pods. Protect young plants from very hot direct sun and be sure they do not dry out while becoming established.
Indoor Growing: This plant grows large and requires the full spectrum of light, 4 to 6 hours daily, high humidity, and warm temperatures with at least 10°F day/night differential and a mild chilling period during winter to produce flowers, so they are not well-suited to be grown indoors.
Climate: Buddleias are recommended for USDA Zones 6, 7, 8, 9. Generally, well-established plants freeze to the ground and resprout in the Spring in Zones 6 and 7. Elsewhere, it retains leaves, but goes through a semi-dormant resting phase. Plant early in the season and protect from cold until established.
Sterile non-invasive hybrid Buddleias are not subject to any shipping restrictions except for the State of Washington, which has restricted the entire genus. However, in an abundance of caution, we do not ship any plants of the Buddleia species to Washington State, Oregon, Utah, Arizona, or Hawaii.
Growers' Note: A balanced butterfly habitat should include a range of both nectar sources and host plants.
