Tibouchina granulosa rosea Regina, or Pink Princess Flower, is a tropical flowering tree that is one of about 450 different species in the Tibouchina genus.
Several Tibouchina species are among the most popular flowering trees for urban and other warm-climate landscapes because of their vibrant color and small, manageable size. In their native habitat of South America, these will reach heights of 30 feet or more but seldom grow that large in urban settings; the average mature size is about 15 feet.
Aside from fast growth and manageable size, the best feature of this tree is the striking bright pink flowers. The flowers of most Tibouchinas are purple, but Regina is a rare cultivar that produces clusters of large, five-petaled single blooms in a neon bright shade of medium, slightly lavender-toned pink. The long-lasting bloom cycle begins in late Spring, with color showing nonstop for several months.
It is a fast, upright-growing tree with attractive reddish-brown bark and unique squared stems. The dark green, narrow, distinctly veined, lance-shaped leaves have a rough, gritty, granular texture, from which the Latin name granulosa is derived.
The best permanent placement is in full sun; however, young plants should gradually acclimate to their permanent full-sun planting locations as they mature to avoid burning and drying out. Plants will grow in light to moderate shade, but bloom, overall vigor, and growth will decrease proportionally to diminished light levels.
