Senna bicapsularis is commonly known as Winter Cassia or Christmas Cassia, and is a unique addition to tropical and semi-tropical gardens. It matures into a large, tree-like shrub that produces showy, vibrant, pure, bright yellow blooms with large, contrasting, brown stamens late in the season when many other plants are colorless. Christmas Senna will begin to show color in late autumn and typically reaches the peak of its bloom cycle in late December (hence, the common name "Christmas Senna").

While its flowers are its best feature, cassias have an unusual leaf structure that adds visual interest even when not blooming. The delicate, ultra-soft, small, round leaves of Winter Cassia make an excellent background for plants that flower earlier and can be strategically located in midsummer to provide protective, light, dappled, filtered shade for sensitive plants.

Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in full sun to very light
shade.. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed with a good-quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer initially, and once per year in spring. Prune after flowering to control size, shape, and remove seeds.

Indoor Growing: This plant requires high light, warm temperatures with a minimum 10°F day/night differential, and high humidity to produce flowers. Significant modifications are typically required for it to produce flowers indoors.

Climate: Christmas Senna is a tropical plant recommended for growing outdoors in USDA Zones 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not consider factors such as humidity, rainfall, or day/night temperature variations.. Growers' Note: There are many different species of Senna. 'Senna bicapsularis' is frequently confused with invasive species that easily spread beyond the intended growing area. However, Senna bicapsularis is not invasive. Its seeds have a hard outer coating and do not germinate easily or at all without special treatments. It is typically grown from vegetative cuttings. The best practice for all types of seed-producing plants is to prune after flowering to prevent seeds from being spread by wind and wildlife.
