Callistemons are a genus of about 30-35 species of flowering semi-tropical trees and shrubs in the Myrtaceae or Myrtle Family. They are commonly known as Bottlebrush for the resemblance of their flowers to those soft-bristled brushes used to keep baby bottles clean.
Callistemon pallidus, or Lemon Yellow Bottlebrush, is a quirky member of this group that produces the same fluffly, cylindrical, tufted flower, but in a markedly different color of soft pastel yellow.
Flowers are borne near the terminal ends of long, flexible branches cloaked in gray-green lance-shaped leaves. Newly sprouted leaf growth is coppery red, soft, and droops slightly from the ends of the branches. The small-statured 9 to 10-foot trees develop an attractive, light gray, gnarly-textured bark as they age, bringing interest to the landscape even when they are not blooming.
The peak bloom cycle occurs in mid to late Spring and lasts for several weeks. Flowers are nectar-rich and attractive to a wide variety of pollinators.
This tree is an excellent choice for small yards and urban lots, and is an unusual and eye-catching focal feature, whether mass planted as a hedge or used as a standalone element.
Unlike most of our tropical plants, bottlebrush can withstand some levels of frost it should, however, be covered or brought inside if a hard freeze or sustained cold temperatures are expected.
