Leucophyllum frutescens, or Texas Sage, is among the easiest to care for and most versatile plants available for Southern gardeners. It can withstand periods of drought, moderately low temperatures, and the summer heat of the desert or tropics. It doesn't mind salt spray, and as long as the soil drains well, it will tolerate a wide range in pH, and actually prefers not to be fed too often. Oddly, growing in rich, high-organic soil and/or frequent feeding will decrease bloom.
The soft silver velvet-textured foliage is attractive and adds interesting color and texture when the plant is not blooming. The small, bright purple flowers provide a showy and attractive contrast from late spring to mid-fall. It's versatile and can be mass planted, used as a hedge, background, boundary, or transitional accent planting. It may also be grown as an outdoor garden, porch, or patio plant. It is a good choice for areas where other plants might not thrive.
Care: When mature, plant in coarse, porous, well-draining soil or media. Locate in full sun. Water sparingly to maintain minimal soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed lightly only as needed based on appearance. Prune after flowering to control size and shape.
Indoor Growing: Texas Sage can be grown indoors under conditions similar for succulents and cacti. It requires a loose, porous, well-draining media, free-draining pot, full spectrum of light, a minimum of 6 hours daily, warm temperatures with at least 10°F day/night differential to produce flowers. Take care not to overwater.
Climate: Texas Sage is a semi-tropical plant well-suited for dry climates. It is recommended for USDA Zones 8*, 9, 10, 11 (*Generally considered root hardy in Zone 8 when well established.) Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not consider other variables. Cold protection is recommended until plants become well established.
Condition: This product is one (1) young, starter-sized plant intended for a gardener to grow to its mature size. You may expect a starter-size plant to be well-rooted, have a root zone of approximately 4 inches in diameter, be a minimum of about 6 to 8 inches tall, and have no blooms or buds on arrival. It may be shipped with or without a pot, as appropriate.
