Thunbergia erecta is commonly known as King's Mantle or Clock Bush. It is a moderately large, upright, densely branched woody shrub native to tropical Africa that grows to about 6 feet tall and equally wide and produces abundant, medium-sized, slightly curved trumpet-shaped flowers in vibrant purple with golden yellow throats throughout the year in warm climates. It is an easy-care, old heirloom favorite that has graced Southern gardens for decades.

It is a tough, resilient plant that requires only basic care to thrive and bloom, and that can be used in many versatile and interesting ways. It is a good choice for a tall-growing boundary, background, or privacy hedge, makes an eye-catching accent or transitional feature in mixed perennial beds, or can be grown as a large outdoor garden pot.

Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in full sun to lightly shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer initially and repeat annually in spring. Prune after flowering to control size, shape, and remove seed pods.

Growers Note: This plant is upright growing, a bush, not a vine. We are seeing it frequently mis-described as having a vining habit. It is not the same as 'Clock Vine'.
