Sunshine Pink Mimosa Sensitive Live Plant Flowering Ground Cover Unusual Pom Pom Flower Starter Sz 4 Inch Pot

Mimosa is a large genus of 600 +- species in the Fabaceae Family that are native to warm areas across both hemispheres. They largely share traits of nitrogen fixation, fern-like leaves that fold together when disturbed, and unusual, puffball flowers. Mimosa strigillosa, or Sunshine Mimosa, is a low, prostrate-growing species that is native to the Southern US and has recently gained popularity as a tough, resilient, and ecosystem-friendly alternative to turf and exotic plants.

Sunshine Mimosa is also called Fiber Optic Plant, and is a native plant choice that is equally fun, interesting, and unique as any exotic. It is only about 6 to 9 inches tall, has a creeping, spreading, horizontal growth habit, and produces puffball flowers with sparkly gold tips throughout the warm season, and is amazingly versatile, resilient, and care-free. It's beautiful and eye-catching, attracts pollinators, is drought-tolerant, pest and disease-resistant, tolerant of modest cold and high heat, does not require fertilizer, and is an excellent choice for weed and erosion control in areas where mowing is undesired or difficult.

Care: This plant can thrive in nearly any well-draining soil type. Supplemental irrigation is needed only until well established and in severe, prolonged drought conditions. Periodic pruning of runners improves density, refreshes growth, and stimulates new blooms. Sunshine Mimosa goes dormant, dies back in winter and resprouts in spring.

Indoor Growing: This plant is recommended for growing outdoors. It does not adapt easily to indoor conditions and is not recommended for growing as a house plant.

Climate: Recommended for growing within its native range of Zones 8B, 9 &10, and 11.

*Grower's Note: Mimosa strigillosa is related to the novelty 'Sensitive Plant' (Mimosa pudica) but is a different species. While it shares the fine, lacy foliage and characteristic folding in of the leaves when disturbed, the response is slower and less dramatic.
