Petrea volublis is commonly called Sandpaper Vine due to the rough texture of the leaves. Other common names are Queens Wreath, Sandpiper or Bluebird Vine, and Florida Wisteria or Tropical Wisteria, It is a different species unrelated to Northern Chinese Wisteria. The common name relates to the beautiful, dramatic, draping clusters of vibrant purple flowers, which are similar in look only to northern Chinese Wisterias.

It is a fast-growing, semi-tropical flowering vine. Professional opinions on its origin and native range vary. It can be found naturalized in Florida, Mexico, Tropical America, the West Indies, Central America, northern and western South America, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Hispaniola. Whether it originally grew across the entire range where it is found currently or was introduced from or into one area or another via travel and trade is debated.

Typically, there are at least two peak long-lasting cycles in the Spring and Fall. However, blooming is also determined by age and maturity. Since it blooms at the terminal ends of new growth, it often cycles into bloom at other times of the year. Plants require a few seasons to mature and reach their full blooming potential.
