Odontonema tubaeforme (or perhaps Odontonema strictum) a/k/a Red Firespike is a versatile and easy-to-grow semi-tropical flowering shrub that is confirmed as native to semi-forested areas of Central America and possibly Mexico. The species was once thought to be native to Florida, but the consensus of academic opinion has shifted to 'naturalized' in Florida vs 'native'. The botanical name Odontonema tubaeforme has largely been accepted as the correct one. However, some experts believe 'tubaeforme' and 'strictum' to be very similar, but different species. While that is interesting information for us plant nerds, it isn't important to gardeners with a lovely, lightly shaded spot where they'd like to have something tall, colorful, non-invasive, ecosystem-friendly, and full of yummy nectar for the pollinators in the fall and winter. Firespikes remain a perfect choice.
Firespike matures as a tall 4 to 5 ft branched shrub with large, shiny, dark green ovate leaves. They are quick to establish and require only basic care, producing showy spikes of bright red, double-lipped, nectar-rich tubular blooms that resemble a large salvia on tall stalks held above the body of the plant. The bloom cycle lasts for 2-3 months, and each bloom lasts for weeks. As an added bonus, it thrives and blooms in light shade from late summer to mid-winter, and is typically in color during the Holidays. It's a great choice for screen and boundary plantings as a background, accent, or transition point for lightly shaded mixed perennial beds, and an easy-care, low-maintenance essential for butterfly and hummingbird gardens.
Care: Easy to grow and quick to establish, this plant thrives in a lightly shaded location. Plant in fertile, well-draining soil, maintain consistent moisture, and fertilize only as needed based on the appearance of the plant. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and control size.
Indoor Growing: This species is not well-suited for year-round indoor growing due to mature size and its need for high light levels, warm temperatures with a day/night differential, and high humidity.
Climate: A semi-tropical perennial that is recommended for USDA Hardiness Zones 8B, 9, 10, and 11. In Zone 8B, it should be planted early in the season and protected from cold until very well established. We recommend protecting from frost and freezing in all zones for the best appearance and bloom performance.
